10 Minute Rescue Plan

A proven technique for helping children process big feelings through story

Course Lessons
01 Why Book Therapy?

Welcome to The 10-Minute Rescue Plan

Reading with your child isn't just about books. It's about connection, growth, and emotional resilience. The stories you choose, and how you read them, can do so much more than pass the time. They can ease transitions, reduce meltdowns, and help your child actually process big feelings.

Why This Matters
That's why Book Therapy™ exists. It's not about adding more to your day. It's about bringing intention to what you're already doing. When you pair the right story with the right moment, you can calm big emotions in real time, connect when things feel hard, and reset the tone of your home in just 10 minutes.
What to Expect

This course is designed to be super quick and doable so even in your busiest seasons, you can make it work in just 10 minutes a day. You'll learn how to use storytime as your go-to rescue plan for tough days, big feelings, and fast resets.

02 The 7 Key Points

These are the elements that make a book work beautifully for this technique. But don't let the list overwhelm you. Your book doesn't need to check every single box. Think of these as helpful guideposts, not requirements. The more it hits, the better but even a few can make a real difference.

Character: Slightly older than your child, speaking directly to the reader, taking them on an adventure rather than a conversation with another adult.

Rhyme & repetition: Just like that catchy song on the radio, rhythm and repetition lodge the message deep into your child's subconscious so the coping skills become second nature.

Soft illustrations: Bright art stimulates the opposite of what you want before sleep. Gentle artwork keeps the sensory experience calm.

03 Consistency

Read the same book every single day before nap and/or bedtime, but once daily works too. Consistency is the engine that makes this technique work.

After reading: A quick 60-second interactive review. One key moment, one question, let your child answer.

"Remember when Yaya thought there was a monster? What did she use to figure out what it really was? That's right, her flashlight. And what did she realize her mind was doing?"

After about a week they'll have the book memorized. That's exactly the goal.

04 Next Level Mastery

The deepest form of learning is teaching. Once the book is memorized, flip it around.

  • Younger children: Hold the book open, turn the pages, ask them to tell you the story from the pictures.
  • Older children: Let them read it aloud to you or a sibling.

This transforms passive listening into active ownership. Your child is no longer just hearing the coping skills. They're embodying and teaching them.

05 Everyday Integration

Weave the book into daily life with "daily flow reminders" — small, natural moments where you connect the story to what's happening right now.

  • When your child shows the emotion the book addresses: "This reminds me of when Yaya felt that way. What did she do?"
  • When your child spontaneously quotes the book, join in and celebrate it.
  • Use car rides, mealtimes, and transitions as natural moments to revisit a line or coping tool.

The goal is for the book's message to become a shared language in your home. A shortcut your child can access in real moments of big feelings.

The Magic Mind Series
Fear of the Dark
by Nikki B · illustrated by Rye Chavez

Written after years of working with young children and after Nikki's own two boys developed a deep fear of the dark. When she couldn't find a book that hit all 7 Key Points, she wrote her own.

Meet Yaya, a character just slightly older than your child who takes readers on a brave nighttime adventure, teaching them that their mind is magic and darkness holds nothing to fear.

"My mind is magic, don't you see. Darkness does not frighten me.
When the sun sleeps and it's dark as a cave, I see friendly shadows and always feel brave.
I know I'm safe and will always sleep tight, with my guardian angels all through the night."
