A proven technique for helping children process big feelings through story
Welcome to The 10-Minute Rescue Plan
Reading with your child isn't just about books. It's about connection, growth, and emotional resilience. The stories you choose, and how you read them, can do so much more than pass the time. They can ease transitions, reduce meltdowns, and help your child actually process big feelings.
This course is designed to be super quick and doable so even in your busiest seasons, you can make it work in just 10 minutes a day. You'll learn how to use storytime as your go-to rescue plan for tough days, big feelings, and fast resets.
These are the elements that make a book work beautifully for this technique. But don't let the list overwhelm you. Your book doesn't need to check every single box. Think of these as helpful guideposts, not requirements. The more it hits, the better but even a few can make a real difference.
Character: Slightly older than your child, speaking directly to the reader, taking them on an adventure rather than a conversation with another adult.
Rhyme & repetition: Just like that catchy song on the radio, rhythm and repetition lodge the message deep into your child's subconscious so the coping skills become second nature.
Soft illustrations: Bright art stimulates the opposite of what you want before sleep. Gentle artwork keeps the sensory experience calm.
Read the same book every single day before nap and/or bedtime, but once daily works too. Consistency is the engine that makes this technique work.
After reading: A quick 60-second interactive review. One key moment, one question, let your child answer.
After about a week they'll have the book memorized. That's exactly the goal.
The deepest form of learning is teaching. Once the book is memorized, flip it around.
This transforms passive listening into active ownership. Your child is no longer just hearing the coping skills. They're embodying and teaching them.
Weave the book into daily life with "daily flow reminders" — small, natural moments where you connect the story to what's happening right now.
The goal is for the book's message to become a shared language in your home. A shortcut your child can access in real moments of big feelings.
